The End of the Season

Time is nudging the City to Surf and so many people are keen to either do it for the first time or just do it again. Whatever the reason make sure you are well prepared. Of course you have already been training and working on the programs available to have you up to speed. A few tips to help:

Get checked out by you Physiotherapist to ensure your readiness to participate safely.

Maintain a healthy and nourishing diet in the lead up to the event.

Dont forget the carbohydrate rich meal the night before.

Hydrate well before the event starts and dont wait for the signs of dehydration to occur in the race, make good use of the drink stations along the way.

Have fun, warm up before hand and a good stretching program after the initial recovery phase is a good idea.

If you do injure yourself see your physiotherapist as soon as possible. You can sms  BHPC on 0411522226 on the day if you need advice.

Good Luck!

Sever’s Disease

Sounds terrible but put simply it is ‘growing pains’ and so many growing children have pain in the heel as they grow. Yes it can be inconvenient as it may impact on sport activities, but it is not a sports injury. Your child may happily continue thier involvement in the sport they love, you simply just have to know how to manage the condition and minimise the pain. Dont give up and cancel sport!! See your physiotherapist for advice on how to manage this situation. See us at Baulkham Hills Physiotherapy for information on how to manage your child’s growing pains.

Tablet Headache! Text Neck!

Yes that is not where we are heading! We’re there! The use of tablets and smartphones has increased the Incidence of neck pain and headaches. The diagram shows the increase in pressure with the increase in the angle of the neck as you bend forward. Growing Pains

What exactly are growing pains and why do some children get growing pains and not others. Commonly

growing pains occur as children grow. The skeleton grows in length faster than the soft tisuue and tendon attachments to bone can adapt. This attachement can become inflamed and cause swelling and pains in all sorts of places especially in the knee and the heel. These pains usually appear at varying ages but generally bewteen 7 or 8 and up to 13 or 14. The pains may continue intemittiently until gowth settles. These pains may be worse with increased activity and may be related to sport involvement. It is not generally a requirement to rest from sport. The pain can be managed with heat, ice or painkillers. If the pain cannot be managed consult with your Physiotherapist or your Doctor. See us at BHPC if you need help.

Fractured Wrist

I asked my friend to write a brief summary of what it really means to fracture your wrist, have surgery to repair it then wear a fibreglass splint for six weeks…….

The fun things that happen with a broken wrist ..

Putting both contact lenses in same eye.
Having to change undies during the night needed to pee quick .
Dropping toothpaste on shower floor after missing the toothbrush about 3 times.
Emptying way too much shampoo and conditioner on your head.
Earrings forget it after 10 goes.
Pulling trousers up..
Putting bra on.
Using a knife..
Should I continue
My friend and physio Carolyn J Smale suggested I posted the funny things associated with using one hand .. I mentioned these to her today which made her laugh that lifted my spirit !!

If you or anyone you are with suffers these symptoms they should be assessed as soonas  posssible by a medical practitioner. Other more significant symptoms may include sseizures.

It is not uncommon for people to report ongoing symptoms for months after an impact. Dont hesitate, seek medical advice.

Go to the nrl.com to read the rules of concussion. This is essential reading for trainers, coaches, first aid providers and Parents.

Spartan

To those of you who competed in Spartan at Homebush last week a big
CONGRATULATIONS
To those of you who still have trouble getting out of your chair and walking upright…..you have to train to compete successfully in those types of events. Of course for the elite athletes who competed you would not have any post events aches and pains.
Remember always to be prepared to take part in new events, you must train up to the activities you will be competing in. That of course does not include training at the bar in the Novotel! See you there next year!
